Third arrest in murder of missing men

Coram man, 28, expected to be arraigned Tuesday

By Grant Parpan

CORAM--Suffolk police confirmed Tuesday that a third arrest was made in connection with the alleged murders of Miller Place resident Joseph Odierno and Jairo Santos of New York City.

James Wall, 28, of Coram was expected to be arraigned in First District Court Central Islip Tuesday after he was arrested on two counts of murder, according to Det. Lt. Jack Fitzpatrick, commander of the Suffolk homicide squad.

Police had previously arrested Darren Lynch, a 28-year-old Queens resident and a 1998 graduate of Longwood High School, and his live-in girlfriend Leah Reynolds, 22, in connection with the murder of the two men, who had last been seen in Coram July 16. Mr. Lynch, who police say murdered the two men and dismembered them in his Middle Village apartment before scattering their body parts in his parents' Coram backyard and a nearby sump, was arraigned Friday morning in First District Court in Central Islip and charged with two counts of second-degree murder. Ms. Reynolds pleaded not guilty Friday to a charge of hindering prosecution.

Det. Lt. Fitzpatrick said Tuesday that Mr. Wall, an "acquaintance" of Mr. Lynch's was present at the time the two men were kidnapped.

"The law says that if someone is found guilty of kidnapping in an incident that ends in murder he is also guilty of murder," Det. Lt. Fitzpatrick.

While he confirmed that Mr. Wall, also a 1998 Longwood High graduate, was in the vehicle that transported Mr. Odierno and Mr. Santos from Coram to Mr. Lynch's Queens apartment, Det. Lt. Fitzpatrick declined to say whether or not he was present at the time of the alleged murder.

Det. Lt. Fitzpatrick said no more arrests are expected in the case. "As far as the police are concerned, our role in this investigation is over," he said.
